From struggle to self-reliance: Rashmita’s Story
Rashmita, a resident of Bhujabala village, once struggled to support her family on a daily wage of just $2.94. With limited education and irregular work opportunities, she dreamed of a better future but lacked the means to achieve it.
Her life began to change when Outreach India introduced the PHD program in her village. Through regular meetings and collective discussions, Rashmita became an active member of the Mahima Group. Together, the group identified their challenges, explored solutions, and developed a proposal that was later supported by Outreach International. This collective effort led to the launch of a microloan initiative, through which Rashmita and 30 other members received financial support.
With the help of her loan, Rashmita started cultivating marigold flowers in her backyard—an in-demand crop, especially during festival seasons. Within weeks, her garden began to flourish. Soon, she earned her first independent income by selling flowers in the local market.
Over a period of 4 to 5 months, Rashmita earned $83.33 from marigold cultivation, supplementing her regular income from daily labour. This additional income allowed her to contribute more consistently to her household expenses and begin saving modestly for the future. She also created small employment opportunities by involving fellow community-based organization (CBO) members in harvesting activities.
Reflecting on her journey, Rashmita shares:
“These flowers changed how I see myself—I feel confident knowing I can support my family.”
Beyond financial improvement, the power of collective action brought lasting change. Through the Mahima Group, members now meet regularly to discuss and address community issues, support one another, and access resources. This sense of unity has strengthened their confidence and their ability to improve their living conditions together.
Today, Rashmita’s life is more stable, and she stands as an inspiration within her community. Her story is a powerful reminder that when communities come together, even small opportunities can lead to meaningful and lasting transformation.
